the mermaid’s voice returns in this one by amanda lovelace

I have loved amanda lovelace since the princess saves herself in this one and she just continues to impress. I have an obsession with mermaids, so I was really looking forward to this one and then I read the introduction and realized what it’s focus would be.

This collection is beautiful and a little different from others, given that it includes several poems from other poets. Each one just continues to bring home the point that even though we may have lost our voices, we have to find them. We have to continue to speak up and to speak truth and not let our experiences go unnoticed anymore.

It also really made me pay attention to the idea of getting my voice back and reminded me of those times when I felt like I couldn’t say what I should have. This one wasn’t at all what I expected but it was powerful nonetheless. I love her style, the way she uses the paragraph alignments to accentuate her point and that the poems are short and don’t seem to say much even though they do.

the mermaids voice returns in this one finished the series of Women Are Some Kind of Magic. Honestly, the witch doesn’t burn in this one is my favorite of the series, but it’s also the one that I needed the most at the time that I read it. The entire series is great and should be read by anyone who loves poetry but especially feminists. Not everyone will get it because of the topics it covers and the way those topics are often disregarded, but it’s still beautiful and powerful and important. Maybe we’ll get to teach it to those who come after us one day in a classroom where we’re covering the old ways and the old problems. There have been some of these poems I’ve wanted to plaster all over every wall in my workspace.

Maybe they’ll get it one day.
